Story Time

Okay, peoples, it is story time! For those of you who know me, I'm an aspiring author. Mom suggested that in order to get my word out there, I post some teasers from the novels that are currently in the works (I'm working on three). So, here's the first section (I don't do chapters) of my third, and favorite novel (but don't tell the others that).*

“Ugh! Dani, this candle will not light! What is going on?” Bridgette asked, desperately trying to get the lighter to light.

“Leo, quit messing with Bridgette’s lighter,” Dani scolded while she lit the candle with a fling of energy.

Leo scowled. He could be so angry. It was peculiar that you would find someone with such an affinity for water with such a fiery temper. Dani sighed. She might not like Leo much, but if she had any chance of ever leading this coven, she was going to have to smooth some ruffled feathers.

“Leo, could you come here and help me with some of the cakes?” Dani asked. She was up to her elbows in flour, working fervidly to make enough cakes for the festival the next night.

The sullen boy migrated over to where she was, and silently began molding the cakes into perfect discs.

“Thank you. Would you mind finishing these up? Someone’s at the door,” Dani requested just as the doorbell rang.

Bridgette stared at Dani in surprise. This would be her first festival, and so she wasn’t aware of just how powerful Dani was. Dani smiled to herself. She will soon, she thought as she went towards the door.

“Hello, Mother,” Dani greeted as the door swung open, revealing a middle-aged woman with bright red hair cropped in a pixie and green eyes that sparked and danced with excitement.

“I know, I’m not supposed to be here, but saw this in town and simply had to get it for you. I’m sure you’ll love it, and you can wear it tomorrow for Imbolc!” Aisling chattered.

Dani didn’t catch the rest of her mother’s prattle because she was too busy staring at the swatch of fabric hanging over Aisling’s arm. It was her favorite color, a blue so dark it seemed black, and there was a satiny shimmer to it that hinted at sexy but wasn’t sleazy.

“So, what do you think, morning star?” Aisling begged, using the translation of Dani’s full name, as she always did when she wanted to butter Dani up.

“I love it, Mother. I really do!” Dani exclaimed.

“Oh, good, Danica, I was hoping you’d like it. You know, this is a very big ritual. It’s not every day someone as young as you gets to lead the entire coven in their circle!” Aisling continued to jabber, but Dani ignored her and took the dress to put it on.

She walked upstairs to her room and slipped out of her clothes. A fine cloud of flour mushroomed out from the heap as it hit the floor. Dani let the satin slip over her skin. The cloth settled properly in all the right places, hugging her arms and chest, and flaring out at the hips.

Dani turned to look in the mirror and caught her breath. She didn’t recognize the woman in the mirror. Her blonde hair was transformed from merely hair into a cascade of gold, and her normally pale skin gained a rosy flush. Most important, at least to Dani, her mismatched eyes no longer looked peculiar. The summer-sky blue and spring’s-first-leaves green were both set off perfectly by the deep shade of blue in the dress. As Dani turned in front of the mirror, she wasn’t a sixteen year old girl. She was a future High Priestess, about to conduct her first public circle fearlessly.

A surge of irritated energy from downstairs let her know that Leo was getting tired of waiting for her. Reluctantly, Dani took the dress off and hung it up. She got redressed and, with a sad look behind her at the dress, went back to the kitchen.

“So, star, how did you like it?” Aisling asked breaking off in mid-sentence from the conversation she’d been having with Bridgette.

“It was nice. I liked it.” Dani deliberately downplayed her excitement. She didn’t want anybody to see how happy she was over just a dress.

“Well, that’s lovely, darling. I’m glad. I just want this Imbolc to be special for you,” Aisling said tenderly. Dani smiled. Her mother might be a little ditzy, but she genuinely loved Dani.

Dani patted her mother’s hand with a smile.

“Mother, you know I love you, but you need to go now, so we can keep working on the circle,” Dani said.

Aisling smiled, chimed her goodbyes, and drifted happily out the door like a cheerful tumbleweed.

Leo was abusing the dough a little too roughly. With a little effort, Dani channeled a bit of soothing energy and sent it on its way over to Leo. Immediately he began to relax.

“Thanks,” he whispered so Bridgette wouldn’t hear.

“Dani, can I talk to you in private for a minute?” Bridgette asked; anxiety oozing off of her so thick Dani could practically see it.

“Yes. Leo, don’t forget to set the oven to three seventy-five, okay?” Dani said, slipping out into the living room with Bridgette following close behind.

Bridgette flopped down onto the main couch while Dani took the chair across from it.

“Dani… what’s tomorrow going to be like?” Bridgette asked, looking and sounding very small. Suddenly, Dani was reminded that Bridgette was only twelve.

“It’s going to be wonderful. Imbolc is all about women. The men will only participate in the opening of the coven. Imbolc is all about spring, the first signs of it. Candles will light up all the trees, healing and cleansing rituals will be done, and then we’ll cast the Initiate’s circle. All the girls who haven’t been officially recognized by the coven will step into the center with me. Together, we will cast a full circle, and the group of you will represent spirit. Then, they’ll leave to set up the feast inside. The women will stay outside, and then we’ll begin to celebrate. There’s no reason to be worried. I already know you have more power than most girls do at your age. I mean, tornadoes in New York? Whoever heard of that happening? You have some serious power, and now you can learn to use it. Bridgette, tomorrow is going to be one of the best nights of your life.” Dani put as much soothing energy into her words as possible, hoping to ease some of Bridgette’s anxieties. “Plus, this whole thing is in honor of the goddess, Brigid. Your namesake. How lucky can one girl get?”

“Thank you, Danica. Thank you,” Bridgette sighed, relaxing into the couch.

“Any time, Bridgette.” Dani left to go help Leo, but Bridgette’s words stopped her.

“And Dani? You’re going to be a great High Priestess.”

Dani smiled happily and went back to the kitchen to work on the cakes.

Throughout the day, members of her coven circled in and out on shifts to help with the feast’s food. Only the youngest were allowed to help in this aspect, by tradition. It was a festival of new beginnings, and so the youth were encouraged to do as much as possible. After the cakes were done, all the young women gathered inside Dani’s home for Bridgid’s bed.

Aisling had been unceremoniously kicked out to a neighbor’s home the night before, so the women had the run of the house. They spent the hours before sundown making dolls out of corn husks Dani had bought at the supermarket. The girls decorated the dolls with various ribbons and trinkets everyone had brought. After the dolls were done, they began on the beds for the half dozen dolls. As Dani worked on building a fire in the hearth, a knock sounded at the door.

“Boys are here!” she called out as she moved to the door. On her stoop stood all the young men of the coven, ranging from ten to nineteen.

“Merry meet. May we enter?” the oldest, Brian, asked. It was all part of the festival. Men had to ask to enter the home, and then they had to treat both the girls and the dolls with respect.

“Merry meet. Girls, should we let them in?”

“I suppose we should…” one of the older girls laughed.

“You may enter,” Dani said, stepping back to let the boys in.

The young men piled in, and they had a small celebration. Punch and cookies materialized seemingly out of thin air. Everyone was laughing and having a nice time when the doorbell rang.

Dani stepped away from the conversation she was having with Nikolai, earth in her circle, and went to the door once more. Peculiarly enough, she didn’t recognize the energy swirling around on the other side of the door.

“Hello?” she asked more then said as the door opened.

“Merry meet, Danica. I’m sorry I’m so late, but I had some difficulty finding the house. May I enter?”

“Uh… merry meet. Of course, come right in,” Dani said, surprised into stumbling over her words. She took in the young man as he entered and removed his shoes.

Dark black bangs fell sloppily over deep brown eyes that were deeply set into a suntanned face, something rarely seen in Lake Placid, New York. He was sturdily built and looked like he played sports. That was as far as Dani got before the boy realized she was watching him.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I haven’t introduced myself yet. I’m Robert, Robert Vanator. I just moved into the area. My old High Priestess, Diana, spoke very highly of you. It’s very nice to meet you,” Robert said formally, extending a hand out for Dani to shake.

Warily, Dani took his hand. Covens weren’t supposed to be simple to find. True enough, she and a girl Diana had bonded one summer years ago before Diana moved south, but they’d lost contact. How had Robert found the coven?

So, there you go! If you like it, drop me a line. If you hate it, drop me a line. Heck, at this point, I'll accept anything, so long as it's a response!

*Just to clarify, this is fiction. I have taken a lot of liberties here, and I am in no way supporting, discouraging, or claiming to know anything about Wiccan or Paganism. So nobody get angry. It's all fictitious.

Random Rant

Okay, so I'm massively bored. Hence, blog time! I haven't been to the library lately, so no new books *hint hint daddie*. However, I have a new song I'm just the tinniest bit obsessed with. It's stuck in my head big time. So, I shall post the link, in the hope of getting it stuck in someone else's head too, so someone can share my insanity. Join the insanity, listen to it! :-) On a completely different note, I have decided that anything is possible, except slamming a revolving door. However, my father disagrees, saying that he has seen someone slam a revolving door. Does it count as slamming a door if all you actually did was break it? What else will I plug today... oh yeah! Narwhals. I recently discovered they exist. Crazy, right? I mean, they're midget whales with horns! Who'd have thought? Of course, a certain young man who will remain nameless *cough cough CHRISTIAN cough cough* denies their existence. So, I have included a photograph of narwhals. What now? :-O I'm also watching the first season of Bones on DVD, muchos gracias to the Kieffers for loaning it to me! :-) Lots of love to all of you! I get the feeling I'm forgetting something... something important... Then again if it was so important, I wouldn't have forgotten it! I'm funny, I know it. Have a little laugh at my expense, it's okay. ;-)

Whoops!

I haven't really had a whole lot of time to myself lately, so I've been skimping on my blog. Sorry! :-( Whoops!
First, I need to plug an absolutely incredible band. They're called The Strive, and they're a local band. Their lead singer, Brendan(center), went to my high school. Anyway, I saw them perform during our lock-in for Joplin last night. They were so good! My personal favorite songs were Honestly and Sleepless. Check them out at http://www.facebook.com/thestrive?sk=wall, they're really awesome!
On a similar note, I attended a lock-in to raise money for the victims of the recent Joplin tornado. It was a really great cause, and a very fun night. Thanks to all the teachers who dealt with us sleep-deprived loopy teenagers, and to everyone who helped make the lock-in possible!
Now, movies. I just saw Pirates of the Caribbean 4, On Stranger Tides. In my opinion, despite the sad lack of Orlando Bloom, it was the best Pirates movie yet. No confusing subplots, like in 2 and 3, plus it showed Jack Sparrow's softer side. Not too soft, mind you, but soft enough. Five out of five stars!
Other than that, I've been so preoccupied with the end of the year stuff and moving and Girls Camp (next week!) that I really haven't been reading much... Shocking, I know. So I guess that's it for this incredibly brief and slightly rambling anecdote. Bye!

Bored Ramblings

I'm SO BORED!!! So now, you get to be bored with me! :D hahahahaha!
So, last night was the church mock prom. I got an AH-MAZING dress at the DAV thrift store for $8, and it was awesome! think Belle's gold dress without the flooffy skirt and in purple. It was so pretty! I looked FABULOUS! If I could figure out how to load the pictures off of my camera, I would, but I can't, so I won't. Anyway, the dance was fun. It would've been better if a certain someone hadn't abandoned me to wolves (read, lovebirds). Other than that, there was a chocolate fountain and a caramel fountain in which you could dip everything you wanted into it (strawberries, angel food cake, pineapple, pretzels, marshmallows...).

That was fun. The music was terrible, of course. That's what happens when you let 30+ year olds pick the music. It wasn't pretty. Jk, it was OKAY(ish).

It reminded me that you people, who would be lost without me, needed some musical advice. Let's begin.

1) Forget You by Cee Lo Green. It's an awesome break up song. You may have heard the Glee version, but trust me, listen to this one. Oh, but be careful! There is another version (by the same guy) that is a little more... explicit.
2) All Again for You by We The Kings. This song is... okay, why am I listening to songs about breakups? weird... But it's a great song! It really is!
3) Welcome to the Black Parade by My Chemical Romance. It is so... pawesome! (punk+awesome=pawsome)
4) Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind. It's that song that goes 'doo doo doo doo doo do doo' You know?
5) Who We Are by Hope Paltrow. It is such an empowering song. I've been listening to it while I walk down the halls. It makes me feel like I'm in a movie when I do that...

Okay, done rambling now. Bye-Bye!

Books Review

Okay, I just read the best book. It's called The Hollow by Jessica Verday. It's almost a gothic novel in the way it's written, and it's so difficult to describe, you'll just have to read it for yourselves. I'm trying to find its sequel, The Haunted, so I can read it too... Soooooo excited! You can feel that school's coming to a close. Everyone's so ADD in class it's almost like we're not even in school. Lunch is crazy loud, and passing period? Forget it! There's no way I can go more than two feet without someone calling my name. I really love this school. I was so nervous when I first started, and look at me now. Most of my friends are upper classmen. I have a couple enemies, and enough drama from my friends to fill the state of Alaska. It's almost like Degrassi... except not at all. I love all my friends, and even though I miss Liberty, I wouldn't trade right now for the world. I'm ridiculously happy. You can taste summer in the air. Mother Nature is definetly taunting me, alterating hot and cold like she is. One day, I'm going to get that woman on some mood-stabalizers. Other than that, Sister K just gave me some clothes, and I'm in love with them! :-) I've been looking healthier lately, maybe because I'm starting to sleep like a normal person. Okay, so maybe I only sleep five hours a night, but that's two hours more than I used to get, and you can tell. I'm in a better mood lately, too. I'm not sure why, maybe the good weather, maybe some new friends, but something's different and I'm definetly happier than I've been in a long time. It feels good to feel this good. I'm pretty excited for mock Prom at church tomorrow night, there's going to be a chocolate fountain (that explains my excitement, doesn't it now?). Oh! Last week, Christian, Brionna, Bridgette, and I all went to the movies. It was so nice to just get away from it all for a while, and it set me in a great mood for the rest of the week. We saw Source Code, which was best described by Christian. "So, at first you're kind of 'huh?' and then in the second part you're *blowing up sound effects*". Yup, that's the film! So, tonight is Matt's birthday!!! Happy b-day homie! (yeah, I just said homie. How gansta am I?) We're all going to the movies tonight, and I'm pumped. I've already got what I'm wearing on (orange-red Old Navy shirt with dark-wash skinnys from Deliah's), but I'm going back and forth on makeup.I'll figure it out... eventually. My hair has been absolutely uncontrollable lately. I've been keeping it pulled back because if it isn't, it might eat someone. That wouldn't be good, unless it was River. (jk, buddy. <3 u!) But yeah, it's all OVER the place, sticking up in so many different directions it looks like an over-complicated compass. Ridiculous, but true. *shrug* Thank goodness for ponytails. Ice cream truck just came by!!!!!!!! EPIC!!!!!!!! I told my friend Caitlyn (I don't know if I spelled it right) to check out this blog for books, not telling her it was mine. All I said was "I get all my books from her!" Well, I do! Since I'm the blogger, I get all my books from me. Hahahaha! I'm evil... >=-) I guess that's all for now... I've kind of rambled on a bit. Good Golly

Ohmichaeljackson I just realized that I haven't posted since December! That is ridiculous! I must be crazy! So, here's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna give you a quick little rap with books and stuff. Here we go. :D

I just starting watching anime in my overly-geeky manner. This is a picture of the cast from my current favorite, Fullmetal Alchemist. I'm also watching the remake, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. They are both INCREDIBLE!!!! J'aime Edward Elric!
Books:
For January:

Peeps by Scott Westerfeld- Yes, I know that I use this author's books a lot, but hey, he rocks! So here's the summation of this book. In this book, vampires are not supernatural flying creatures. We're talking about a parasite. People who have the parasite are 'parasite-positive' or peeps, for short. Cal is one of the rare few peeps who isn't driven insane by the parasite. But is there more to this disease than he realizes?

For February:
Let's see if I can find something sort of romantic in honor of the holiday...

The Fearscape by Simon Holt- So maybe I'm just a little cynical. But hey, you get like, one millisecond of romance here! This novel is the incredible conclusion to the Devouring series. I have just one thing to say: When dark creeps in and steals the light
Bury your fear on Sorry Night
For in the winter's blackest hours
Comes the feasting of the Vours
No one can see it
The life they stole
Your body's here
But not your soul
Read books 1 (the Devouring) and 2 (the Soulstice) before reading this one. It's awesome! :D

For March:
Can I review a book I wrote myself? No, probably not... So I'll settle for this.
The Dead and the Gone by Susan Pfeffer-This is a great sequel to Life as We Knew It. It tells the story of a young man living in New York City when a large meteor knocks the moon closer to Earth. This triggers a series of cataclysmic events that alters everything. Now, nothing will be the same. You really should read Life as We Knew It first, but it isn't strictly necessary. I have just learned that there is a third book called This World We Live In, which I have not read. I am anxiously waiting to see if the library has it.

Movies:

I recently saw Gnomeo and Juliet. It was so cute! A great film for the family, with a few jokes that'll get even the adults laughing!

Life in General:I decided today to watch Twilight and New Moon. Taylor decided to join me. Decided. Yup, my brother has crossed over to the Twilight side. Awesome. I have never been more proud of him as when he freaked out when Edward left Bella. Then he spent the rest of the movie asking when Edward was going to show up! I love my little brother!! Oh, and I have taken up sewing things by hand, such as throw pillows and wrist warmers, that sort of thing. Nothing big yet, but I'm getting pretty good. Finally, a domestic quality where I can only hurt myself!

Sick Day

Aww! Little me and baby Taylor! So cute!

I feel absolutely awful at this moment. I'm sick as a dog, and possibly sicker than that. I think it's a sinus infection, but whatever it is, they could use this thing as a form of torture. Heck, Amnesty International is already trying to 'relieve my suffering'. Just kidding, I love Amnesty International. But there mmight be some goverment agencies looking into this for interogation options. Between the headache, the coughing fits, the runny nose, and the constant feeling of some obese man sitting on my chest, I'm confessing to things I didn't even do! But other than that, the moment I get to school, Mr. Directator is going to murder me for missing practice (hint: I'm not going to Norway, look for the body). However, I'm actually looking forward to the concert, providing that I'm alive tomorrow for the dress rehearsal.

On a lighter note, it is at this moment, 17 days until Christmas. That makes me happy. I'm working on some super-secret-surprises for my family, but unfortunately, due to this economy and the fact that no one in their right mind hires a fourteen year old, I can't afford to buy gifts for my friends. But hugs are still available! (--)> it's a penguin!

Love and lemon drops,
Victoria

* just going to say, i am both sick and exhausted so this post might not make much sense. sorry. :)
